When I boot up my PC it says my HDD's are SMART capable but disabled. Can someone tell me what this means and should it say enabled.

It can be enabled in the BIOS.

Smart is a method of monitoring your hard drives for errors, wil give an error message if disk errors reach a certain limit.
Yuo can then run error checking on your drives as necessary.

SMART does NOT negate the need to make regular backups of your important data.
