Smart Engine cleared, now no IE

Friend picked up the above virus somehow. I followed the Bleeping Computer guide to the letter. Virus appears to have gone, but when trying to open IE8, can't connect. Emails send/receive OK and Skype shows as connected. Any ideas, please? (he doesn't have an alternative browser to try - I shall see him this pm and try Firefox)

Or maybe run the fixit on this.

It does not work on W/7.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll try them when I go there later.

Possibly a silly question but he hasn't got work offline accidentally ticked?

I don't think so. It was OK until the virus and subsequent removal.

Open internet explorer, Tools/internet options/connections/lan settings/make sure there is a tick in 'automatically detect settings' and 'NO' tick in the 'proxy server box'

Thanks - something else for me to check when I go there later.

Yup - the proxy box was ticked. Must have been something the festering virus did! Thanks all.
