What is your OS? If win 2000 it may be caused by a recent update via windows update.

Post more details of your machine and someone may be able to help you.

I USE XP AND EVERYTHING HAS BEEN GOING OK FOR NEARLY A YEAR BUT RECENTLY IT HAS BEEN TAKING 1 TO 2 MINUTES FOR WINDOWS TO SHUT DOWN
FIRST OF ALL THE ICONS DISAPPEAR BUT THE ON SCREEN WALLPAPER STAYS ON FOR A FEW MINS BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN

I had exactly the same problem as you. In addition, my screensaver, 3D Pipes, was causing problems. I changed my screensaver to Beziers, and the shutdown problem disappeared, along with the screensaver problem.
