Slow Starting Desktop

Hi all

my Dad has a problem with his PC - hopin someone can help.

When he starts or re-starts his PC he gets to the Desktop and the background image shows. However the Start button, the Taskbar, or any of the Desktop icons dont show. I've timed it and they all show approximately 2 mins 25 secs after background pic shows.

The background pic has been there since installation.

I've checked MSCONFIG and the only programme that loads is Zone Alarm Security Suite.

I've cleaned the disc using CCleaner in Safe Mode, and also ran Wise Registry Cleaner in Safe Mode. Neither seems to help.

This problem started when he removed 3 limited User Accounts, and decided to keep only his own Admin Account. Could this have caused this problem?

Once the PC eventually starts it flies along.

He's running XP Home, 1GB RAM, and Intel Celeron CPU 420 @ 1.6HZ.

Any help be great thanks.

Hi all

followed rossgolfs advice but received the message:

'Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache.

Insert your Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 CD now.'

His PC came pre-installed with XP Home NOT Pro, and Service Pack 2 is installed, and his PC is up to date.

Can anyone shed any further light on the slow starting desktop issue?

Thanks

Repair XP by replacing corrupt files
Type

sfc /scannow

in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer. This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.

sfc /scannow problems

IF it does ask for the CD then follow the link to find out how to point scannow to the i386 folder on your dads hard drive.
