slow start-up sometimes

I'm on DSL and the system is XP. Sometimes, when I turn on the computer, it starts up right away. Other times, the desktopscreen shows minus the icons. It may take 4 min. to load. An arrow cursor shows, but no wait hourglass. I have no programs on the desktop. I got rid of the cookies and temporary files. Any ideas?

Firewall maybe,There has been a few problems with Zone Alarm,Make sure that you have the most recent version and up-dated.Also Norton.I take it that you have run all your Anti-Virus and Spyware Programs.Yes and don't do what I did,I have a faulty D Drive and left a disc in there by mistake,So it took ages to start up.Took me a fortnight till the penny dropped.
