Slow Start up

My PC is very slow starting up - I have searched a few internet sites but get conflicting answers about what is the best thing to do.
Some recommended "BootVis" but others argued that XP does all the functions BootVis would provide on its own anyway.

I'm afraid I don't know a lot about computers so you will have to explain to me in detail and patiently how to fix the problem!

I've also had messages warning that the Virtual memory is low.

It could all depend on what you call slow, and how many programs are installed on start up.
I know little about this side of things but do know that the more programs started on boot up will slow the whole process down. I have several and it takes a few minutes to get up and running properly.I do perform regular cleaning of the system to get rid of unwanted bits and pieces.
