running XP sp2, ca anti virus, adware, spybot, windefender, and wincare.
when i boot up pc takes 5 to 10 min to respond had a look in task man and MsMpEng.exe seems to takes this long to become idle then cpu goes to 99%. pc works ok for a while then slows right down
then go back to normal. thought it could be my internet conection but same as when am ofline. ran winaso reg optimizer and fixed all errors even deleted win care as some one in a earlier post said this worked for them. any thoughts guys had this prob for a while keeps coming and going.
p.s also ran sfc/scannow

What antivirus are you using? If Norton then that could be the problem. 5-10 min for bootup response is very slow.

CA(EZ) anti virus. stoped it updating at start up but no joy.

In Task Man, Processes, this should show what is using the memory and will give a good indication as to what is hogging the cpu usage.

I think you will find that Microsoft Windows Defender is the culprit hogging your CPU, you can safely delete M'soft Win Defender - a virus sometimes 'pretends' to be M'soft Win Defender also.

sorry about delay got side tracked

big ram users are (GOT 512 RAM)
iexploer.exe 40,k
exploer.exe 25,k
svchost.exe 24,k
msmpeng.exe 22,k
insafe.exe 20,k
will try deleting win defender.
CHEERS

The RAM usage is not the problem, it is the percentage of CPU usage under the Processes Tab. Look down the Percentage figures, the only one which should be showing approx 90%-98% is System Idle Process - this is normal, all the rest should be showing 0% to 4% approx.

all showing 0% system idle showing 99%
