Slow Modem??

  Ian-253307 00:35 15 Mar 2003

I've just purchased a new laptop with plenty of power but I'm concerned with the speed of the Modem. Fastest speed has been 45.2kbps and the slowest 32.6kbps. My 'old rusty trusty' clocks in at 50.6kbps.

Could this be the reason for pages opening slowly or 'sticking', running, then 'sticking' again, before finaly completing?

Hope you can advise, Ian.

I've seen very similar problems on laptops with AMR modems, which often seem to hav inferior performance. I can't see any answer other than trying a PCCard modem.

From carian.

Just to add a bit more info.
Modem is HSP56 MR-M8375.
It doesn't mean a lot to me but it might to someone!

Thanks Woodchip,

I managed 36.6kbps on the first test and a whopping 28.8kbps on the second.

Think I ought to go back to my suppliers and see what they say, or could it be a duff land-line?

and adpater plugs between the main socket from where the Main Phone box on wall is will weaken the signal of data to the modem.

If you have the BT Line 1572 automated anwser service this will cause this. IF yes untick the box "Wait for Dial Tone"

Thanks to all.

Found the fault. I was in the cable!

Speed is now 48.6 kbps. Not the fastest, but a lot better than it was.

Thanks again, Carian.
