I have a newish system with plenty of memory spare etc etc but Microsoft Word starts up really slow. All the other programs are fine, it is just Word. The system is running XP home. Any ideas??

If it's Word 2000, close Word and search your hard drive for the file "Normal.dot". When you find it/them (there might be more than one), delete it/them. Then restart Word, hopefully that will cure the problem. When Word restarts it will create a new Normal.dot file.

I wouldn't delete normal.dot. It stores various settings that you may have made since Word was installed. It's best to rename it to (eg) normal.dot.ori so that Word cannot use it. By doing this, you can use it again if it turns out that it wasn't causing the problem. If you do delete it, however, it will hopefully be in the recycle bin if you need it back.
