Slow internet explorer

i hav a 1mb broadband connection that has recently been playing up.
Whenever i use internet explorer it loads up the page reasonably slower than usual, yet the most annoying thing is that it freezes the IE window for about 30 seconds so i can not select anything eg. favourites, close the window, or click a link.
I have ran an ad-aware full system scan and a norton full system scan and have cleaned my cache through zone alarm. I have also restarted my pc several times and deleted 5gb of programs off my hard drive leaving it with 10gb of space, and it still freezes regularly.
does anyone have an idea what the problem could be or how it may be solved? Any suggestions would help and be muchly appreciated.
