hi guys, got a comp (pentium 4, 2.5GHz, 512MB RAM) given that was full of junk, reformatted it and loaded xp pro. trouble is, try to play a cd and get an error message saying "windows media player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. there might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program or it might not be functioning properly." go into device manager and under "other devices", multimedia audio controller has a yellow question mark with an exclamation mark against it. go into properties, it has:

device type: other devices
manufacturer: unknown
location: pci bus 0, device 2, function 7

it says "the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). to reinstall drivers for this device, click reinstall drivers." do this, tick option to search web as i do not have the mobo driver disc, but to no avail - just comes up with message "cannot install this hardware because the wizard cannot find the necessary software" have tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting the comp, no joy. have been onto sis website and used their product identification facility for finding the correct drivers for the chipset on the board, downloaded the audio driver and tried to install it, only to get the error message:

"UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices" -536870397

click ok and get:

"SiS 7012 PCI Audio Driver Setup - InstallShield Wizard" fail to install audio driver for windows xp. setup will exit

any ideas? all help greatly appreciated

built a pc while back and had a clash with sis onboard driver and some of windows updates [xp] found a fix on microsoft KB with a small fix downloaded from microsoft.

Can you identify the motherboard make and model as you could get the drivers from the manufacturers website.
If you don't know what board it is Belarc or SIW should be able to identify it.

thanks for the input guys - much appreciated. tried ms website but couldn't find the article about sis conflicts, but used belarc to find mobo manufacturer, went onto their website and downloaded realtek ac97 which appears to have cured the prob. again, many thanks for taking the time to reply. cheers!
