Sifting Dates in Excel 97

You have a list of dates in format dd/mm/yyyy down a column in Excel.
How do you sift out all dates occuring in, say, January, or all falling in year 1968?
Is there a way of using Auto-filter to achieve this?

Highlight all the columns you want to sort then on the upper toolbar click Data > sort, this will give you options of how you want to sort the information.

I think you should add some formulas alongside the date that give what you need and filter on that. e.g. if you have date in cell A2, in B2 put =Month(A2) and in Cell C2 put =Year(A2)

Then you have month and year to filter on. You can format these as you like (if you prefer January to 1 for example).
