when i click shutdown it takes a very long time to get the shutbox to display and then afterwards to finally power down. can somebody please help me? I am running Windows XP, have Norton Internet Security 2005 and Sygate Firewall. I use msnmsgr and also a NTL Broadmand medic prgram. I really appreciate any help and hope someone can help me overcome this problem.

I'll start the bidding with

Slow shutdown Win. XP

1- Start/Run and type
Regedit
2 Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CURRENT CONTROL SET/CONTROL

3 Click on “Control folder”

4 Select “Wait to kill service timeout”

5 Right click and select “Modify”

6 Set to a lower value than 2000

7 A setting of 200 will be sufficient

Could Norton be the problem? Sorry if this is covered in my link, I haven't read it for a while.

But I remember Norton doing something in the background, scanning drives etc., which slowed things down. Try disabling Norton to prove.

Ah! The old double-posting ploy! So it is proven to be Norton!

Anything else we can help you with, ReyesKing?

Have you installed any cleaners such as Window Washer etc than 'clean' your page file on shut down.

no seriously- disabling Norton completely speeds up shutdown- but Norton Antivirus is essential! please help me

  ReyesKing 17:46 17 Dec 2004

Norton antivirus - at startup a thing called ccApp runs for symantec and this causes slow shutdown- but norton is essential. what can i do!! :-(

Norton would appear to be checking for updates:

I would disable ccApp at startup and update manually.
