Shutdown problem with Win XP

  silverstone 12:30 24 Feb 2004

Can anyone advise? When I go through the shutdown procedure all is well until the screen saying that it is safe to switch off appears. Pressing the power button causes a reboot rather than swithing off and the only way out is to pull out the power lead.
Processor is 800mhz AMD , operating under Win XP.

Try pressing and holding the start button, instead of just pressing it.

I had the same problem. Through this forum I realised that if you have a Logitec Mouse the drivers you load for it causes this problem. I uninstalled (through add/remove) my Logitec mouse and all worked fine. The drivers that come with XP do the same job so don't worry that your mouse won't work when you uninstall it,thats if you have one of course.

look at control panel/power options/advanced (winxp)
the settings at the bottom should be

when i press the power button on my computer----- should be shut down

when i press the sleep (or standby) function----- should be standby

set these and try to shutdown again.

good luck

PS, as AcidBurn7uk says holding the power button in for about 4-5 seconds should force the pc to switch off (anytime at all, not just when trying to shutdown)
