Shutdown problem

My machine (XP) won't always shutdown correctly. Maybe one out of four times it hangs on "Windows is shutting down". I can turn off by holding the button in, but I'd prefer it if it closed as it should. Can anyone help please?

Here's a good XP Shutdown troubleshooter click here - look under 'SHUTDOWN WORKS, BUT IT’S REAL SLOW' to begin with, which is about half way down the page. G

Thanks Crossbow, a few things on the "Slow" shutdown I'd be reluctant to tamper with! It's not a slow turn off though, it just won't go. Under that heading it mentions installing all the Service Packs, but I've always done them all.
