Should the RAM speed match the processor FSB

I have a system with an Athlon XP2400 which I think has an FSB of 266mhz. The RAM I was given by the retailer was PC2700 which runs at 333mhz. Should they match and will this affect performance if they don't

I think you will find that the FSB affects the processor speed not the ram speed. In fact if you modify the FSB downwards to 200 you will find that your processor will only be shown as 1800+. You can also modify upwards but be careful!!!Certainly this is the case on my motherboard. Double check you mobo manual or come back with mobo details.

The mobo is a gigabyte GA7VT600L. Does this mean I can use either PC2100, PC2700 or PC3200 RAM as long as they are all of the same type?

Yes your motherboard supports the DDR400 so you can use any of the types you mention.
