Shell32.dll missing

My usually reliable XP2 system has let me down over the weekend and I am unable to boot it successfully. The XP CD and an Acronis Recovery CD have both been tried but I end up with the following messages:

Winlogon.exe: Unable to locate component. This application has failed to start because Shell32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. (It didn't.)

Later: RUNDLL

Error loading Shell32. The scheduled module could not be found.

Specific Error Code is 2.

Does anyone know of a workaround/cure for this problem?

I'm going out for an hour or so but will check back later.

Have you set the BIOS to boot from the CD drive click here

Thanks for the suggestion. I've re-checked and the first boot is from the CD drive and, as I mentioned in my post, it has failed with the XP and the Acronis disc.

I've now despaired of curing the fault on the HD and am reinstalling XP and hoping I shall be able to recover my data from an Acronis backup.
