sharing an external hard drive

I have an external hd containing music files connected to one computer and I want to play them from a second computer linked to the first by an ethernet cable. Can this be done and if so how do I do it?

Right click folder you want to share select sharing and security select share this folder on the network.

If it's an external drive, why not just connect it to whichever computer you want to use it on. Connecting by ethernet or anything similar seems to me to complicate an easy situation.

Or have I misunderstood what you're trying to do?

Yes I agree it would be over complicating things if you did not have your computer already connected by ethernet. But he has.

(1) Plug in the external hard drive
(2) Put the external hard drive on file sharing
