sfc /scannow froze the desktop

winxp pro.

My PC has been running pretty well, but I decided to do a virus check.

I used Avaste to do a complete check, but it froze after about 70000 files at a file called
"dllcache", it also froze the desktop so that I had to switch off at the mains.

I have I386 on c: drive. so I did a sfc /scannow, this also froze the screen just after the bar on the indicater started moving.

Any ideas please?

Thanks for those links, I have Ad-Aware, Spywareblaster,Spybot SD, CCleaner and Avast.
I went to Trend-Micro for the online scan, but it told me 3 1/2 hrs to check. so I will do that later.

I think it is something to do with the DLLCache, as indicated by Avast stopping at that whilst scanning, would you know anything about that please?
I have downloaded and opened Spiceworks, so will now have a look at that.
