setting up a website

hello, looking into setting up my own website, there are many google suggestions but it looks a little like a minefield, so i thought i would ask here, i know pretty much nothing so wondered if anyone with experience could offer any advice on what hardware i would need and any pitfalls i should avoid, i have heard it can be a risky business, as always any advice gratefully recieved.
thank you

Depends on what kind of website you want to set up adman. Give us some more detail. Is this a website for family members, for a business, etc.? Do you have any webspace at the moment, maybe some your ISP supplies free? Do you have your own domain name, something like [w ww.adman .co.uk] for example?

I think you'll have more luck in the Webdesign Forum click here adman 2 as there are some specialists hanging around there.

When you say setting up your own website, what exactly do you mean, ie private page or commercial site. If you can be more specific as to what you want to achieve I'm sure that the guidance can be better focused. Particularly when your queries on hardware make me think you may want to host the site as well as create it.

never noticed that forum, hopefully fe will be kind enough to move my thread there.
i would like to make a site which offers a first point of call for someone who needs help dealing with alcohol problems, so would possibly need a server? i have known of a lot of this type of sites closing due to spammers and hackers.
thanks for your replies
