Is Service Pack 2 Worth It?

  JimT 22:15 02 Jul 2005

I've just done a Windows XP reinstall and upgraded to SP1.

However, I had SP2 on my previous installation but I don't feel there was any benefit.

Should I install the SP2?

it's your choice but if you had it already why not the updates from microsoft are now only available for sp1 and 2 and how long before you can not update sp1?.

Is it worth it?

It's free so, yes.

If you XP setup is running smoothly then install SP2 - it incorporates SP1 as well - but don't forget to also download the SP3 updates issued since SP2 first arrived almost a year ago.

It's essential - there are many security updates, as well as bug fixes.

I'm not sure why you re-installed and upgraded to SP1 - you could have upgraded to SP2 instead - SP2 is a superset of SP1.

No doubt about it - upgrade to SP2 and the subsequent SP3 updates as well.

I found a great improvement after installing SP2, no crashes, no viruses or spyware getting through. The system appears to be much smoother and faster too. Don't forget to download the Microsoft Giant Anti-Spyware Beta programme too.

I keep auto update turned on so I get all the new updates as they come.

Incidently I just did all the updats to Office 2000 today, didn't realise there were so many.
