is there any advantage with a serial ata hard drive over a ide 72000 hard drive or is it just a different style

Yes,the SATA HDD is fast, typically 150mbs/s transfer speed, whereas ATA133 is slower.I have just installed a couple of SATA drives, and timed a large file transfer, its approx twice as quick over 2GB file moves to an ATA 7200 drive.

SATA is faster than PATA (parallel ATA) and dispenses with any signal skew associated with a parrallel interface . the IDE in a SATA drive can be less complicated as it has to deal with only one bit at a time. in the long run , when the technology is better established, the interface should be cheaper to produce.
