Acer Predator 21X review
I am about to upgrade a friends pc from an old Intel 800mhz to a AMD 2600 machine, but I would like to ask should I buy a Sempron 2600 or a Athlon XP 2600 ? I think that the Athlon XP would be better but would like others opinion please.
Also both of these cpu's are 333mhz so when buying the ram for his new machine should I buy pc 2700 (333mhz) to match the cpu speed or could you fit pc 3200 (400mhz) the reason I ask this is that the pc3200 is only anout £2 more but will the pc 3200 run ok at 333mhz ?
The new mother board can take up to 400mhz cpu's or ram.
Is a barton core not an idea?? Athlon XP 3200+ has 400Mhz FSB.
If the XP2600+ is the barton core 1.91 ghz( 512K cache ), this will be the best one to put in.
A AXDA2600DKV3D 2600+ thoroughbred runs at 2.08Ghz. The sempron runs at 1.83Ghz. Both have 256K cache.
Some motherboards will not allow you to run different memory speeds if you use a 333Mhz processor, most DO. Read the manual and it will tell you if you can use the faster ram.
Some motherboards allow you to run the ram at 400Mhz, even though the cpu is 333Mhz. i.e. by SPD. Again read the manual, it will tell you.
Thanks all, it is the Athlon xp 2600 Barton core (from overclockers) I will download the manual from MSI to see about the cpu/ram speed with regards to jbp1982 comment, yes I agree but its not my money and my friend is on a tight budget.
Just one more question for dan11 you say that the "XP2600+ barton core runs at 1.91 ghz" then you say that the "AXDA2600DKV3D 2600+ thoroughbred runs at 2.08Ghz" do you mean it will over clock to this?
They are 4 2600+ amd chips
1) the barton 1.91 Ghz (512 cache ) 333fsb
2)the thoroughbred 2.08 Ghz ( 256 cache ) 333fsb
3)the thoroughbred 2.13 ghz ( 256 cache ) 266fsb
4)the sempron 1.83Ghz ( 256 cache ) 333fsb
These are the recommended speeds for the chips.

these are two separate chips and clock speeds.
Certain barton 2600+ cpu's have been know to be clocked upto 2.3 ghz. This would depend on the motherboard, memory, cooling and chip. It is something I would not recommend.;-)
