I think what is meant by "Remember the days of installing free software to protect you are long gone".
Is you can't just install free software and forget it. In other words you have to be more proactive. Watch the teeny weenies :-)

If you mean that the free software should be constantly updated then only a fool would ignore this important procedure and suffer the consequences, I am not one of them.
