Security after xp install

  sierra 16:58 14 Feb 2004

After I do a clean re-install of xp I would appreciate advice on wheather to go firstly to windows update for critical updates or to Symantic for av and firewll updates. I presume as soon as I reconnect my broadband I am vulnerable.

The first thing I would do is get the Windows Update patches, especially click here

Thanks , that was what I was concerned about. Presumably as soon as I make my connection active I could still be vulnerable even before I downloaded the updates.

Before you do your clean install dowload the patch that VoG has posted the link to and save it to disc.

After your clean install load the patch before you connect to the internet.

you can ring ms direct services and they will send you service pack1 and the blaster patch on disk free of charge although you do need an internet connection for sp1 disk install but not for blaster patch.
also make sure xp firewall is enabled before connecting.
personally ,for what it's worth,I like to get my firewall and av activated first

Done that now ! I'll get on with the install. thanks to you both
