Securely deleting HDD before disposal

I have a friend with a PC notebook (running WinXP) who would like to securely delete ALL the files on his HDD before disposing of it. Any ideas how this can be done? If we installed a diskwipe program, does it delete the OS afterwards, or just wipe the free space?

If you mean dispose, as throw away, take a big Hammer to it, if you mean give it to someone else
Formatting the drive should suffice or

You can try this click here and use the low level format option. Should be good enough.
