Second HDD - Good Idea?

  paulsmith602 21:56 01 Jul 2004

I have a 20gb HDD fitted to my system and have just fitted another 20gb HDD as a slave. Will the computer automatically write to the slave if the master is full. If not, is there a way around it?

No it will not automatically write to the second drive. However, a second drive IS a good idea. What you need to do is move all your data onto it and direct your programs (word etc) to save their files to a folder you create on the scond drive (which must have jumpers set to "slave" position.
Two reasons for this: 1. It keeps all your data in one easy to back up place. 2. If you have a serious windows problem and need to reformat and reinstall, you can do so safely as you will only be reformatting C: and not D: where your data is.

As always, the computer will do what you tell it.
Files and even applications can be placed on the second HD, but not automatically............ There will have to be some instruction code which makes that happen.

HD number 2 is a great idea anyway, particularly for safe keeping a backup or most of your data.

Partition your hard disks and then use the first partition for the OS and perhaps some data.
If the first partition is small enough, then you can keep an up-to-date image of it as a painless re-installation when the OS goes belly-up.
