second hard drive

I am fitting a second hard drive to my dell dimension3000 running xp. what should i set the drive to?,dell recomends cable select,others say slave drive.

Try CSL first, your computer will sort it out.

Personally I always set a second drive to slave, but give cable select a try first, bearing in mind that on the IDE cable the connector in the centre is drive 1 and the end connector is drive 2, unless you set them as master and slave.

If Dell recommends cable select then as Diemmess says try that first. If it doesn't work theres no real problem moving the jumper - you can't damage it if that is what you are concerned about.

CSL only works if you have 80 wire ribbon cables fitted, as all modern machine now have these it should not be a problem.
