Searches in Google or AVG

A week ago I upgraded AVG free to a 30 day trial version of their comprehensive package, on my laptop using Vista.
Coincidentally perhaps, since then whenever I carry out a search with Google or using the AVG toolbar, although the results are correct and what I was seeking, when I left click on any of the results, the computer goes off to look at some totally different site and sometimes quite unpleasant ones.
Obviously I have picked up something which is not being detected by AVG. Anyone any ideas on what hopefully free software I now need to use to find out what is interfering with my laptop, and what can I do about it?

Malwarebytes free is about the best of the freebies so I would start with that.
Update then run it.

Thank you buteman it certainly found a lot of spyware; and I appreciate the discounted AVG products too. I have 3 computers connected wirelessly through the same hub. Only 1 of them has attracted all this spyware?
