SD card too large

In the past I have transferred pictures from my camera SD card via a card reader plugged into a USB socket. Got myself a new big 8Gb card which tried to crash my machine by making it incredibly slow. Eventually was told by local guru that there is a practical limit to how computer can scan the drive and this slowing up is to be expected. As I said to him "one learns something new every day" and I thought I knew a fair amount about computers. Thought I would pass it on in case anyone finds same problem.
