Screen resolution auto changing to Safe Mode

My desktop has started to automatically change my screen resolution at random to the Safe Mode 800 x 600 (or whatever it is) and I cannot reset it via Control Panel; the only remedy is a cold reboot.
I'm running Vista Home Premium; it's an Nvidea graphics card. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this/ a remedy?

Maybe the graphics driver needs updating.
Check Nvidia site to see if one available.
Also check device manager to see if any problems on there.

Hi buteman - I've checked the driver, it's up-to-date, and Device Manager flags no problems.

Hi I was just about to scrap my sons computer and found out the main problem was a faulty graphics card.
It used to change the resolution all of the time.
And eventually the screen went blank.Just removed the card this morning but could not get past the start up screen because of other problems that I was having.
So maybe take it out and use the on board graphics or give it a clean and put it back and make sure it is seated properly.
Never new what a graphics card looked like till this morning.
Pity I never removed it a long time ago while the computer was working ok.
