screen blinks after standby and cant do system res

I have an AMD Sempron 2400 1.68 gh, 1.42 RAM
XP Pro Serv pack 2.

some days ago I noticed the screen not coming out of standby immediately, but the picture just blinks for a fraction of a second and then goes black again. This goes on for about half a minute, and then it is fine.

I tried to do System Restore, but I get to "click Next to restore the computer to the above date" and when I click the hourglass comes on for a few seconds and then the hand is back and nothing happens.

Have noticed no other problems so far.

I am now backing up anything I write etc. as I feel a crash is around the corner.

Is there anything I can do to sort this out easily, or is it time for another reload of Windows?

Repair XP by replacing corrupt files
Type

sfc /scannow

in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer. This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.

Have you updated graphics drivers recently? If so did the problem start after the update? If so try rolling back your drivers in Device Manager.
