I'm thinking of buying a scanner that says it scans at 1200dpi x 2400 dpi. Does this really mean that when I stick an old photo in it, it really will scan at that resolution? Or are these technical claims misleading as to the true capability of the scanner in question?
For scanning fotos, even to make large prints, you don't need 1200dpi. I scan a 4x6 or 5x7 print at 400 to 600 dpi, enlarge to 8x10 or so, even with cropping, and the prints are excellent. 1200 isn't going to hurt, but the files will be huge if saved in TIFF (and a foto should be saved in TIFF so the will be no loss of quality in re-saving after working on it. 'bout the only time you would need 1200 or more is if you are scanning a 35mm contact print or perhaps a 6x6.
