Scan disk problem

I was having trouble with my pc so I decided to run Scan disk to see if there was any probs with my hard drive but now It wont boot up. Whenever it tries to boot it says
" Checking file system on C:
The type of file system is NTFS.

A disk check has been scheduled press any key to skip

I have let it run through but at completion it just stops.

And when I try to skip it, it stops and wont go any further.

HHHMMM ?????

I think there is a flag which until reset keeps wanting to run the scan. What happened at the end of the very first scan? Did the power go off during the scan? What was the orignal problem which made you run the scan? If the HDD was failing the full scan may have killed it.

At the end of the very first scan it just stopped. The power hasn't gone whilst it has been doing the scan. And the reason I did the scan was because I came back to my PC after a few hours having left it on and it had a black screen with a message saying there was no valid boot device or something similar, like when you boot a machine with no drive in it.
