Scan disk issue

  Fawaz 23:45 06 Aug 2007

I have a really old computer, about 10 years old. It's not connected to the internet. I turned it off after it crashed and when I turned it back on, I let scan disk run. It gets to 96% then starts doing things to some files, an example is...
/windows/inf/oem7.PNF is cross linked on allocation (or truncated).

The computer is running windows xp, but it says it's not geniuine even though it is.

10 year old PC! Give David Dickinson a call.

Other than that, do a complete format and reinstall Windows 98. XP probably won't work as the chip-set will not be recognised. But you'll have no MS support on 98 any longer.

My personal advice is; strip it, chuck it and scrumage around the depths of your pocket for a tenner to find a PC 5 years younger.

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode?
You could then set Chkdsk in the Properties > Tools of the C drive to fix file system errors and repair bad sectors on the next boot
