Hi,
I have an ABIT NF7-S V2.0 motherboard which has SATA connections on it and according to the internet it supports SATA I Drives. My question is are all SATA II Drives backwards compatible or am i going to encounter problems.
Many Thanks.

“My question is all SATA II Drives backwards compatible or am I going to encounter problems.”

Each SATA standard is backwards compatible with the previous one.

SATA 1 transfer speed 1.5Gbit/s speed - about 150MB/sec

SATA 2 doubled the speed to 3Gbit/s - about 300MB/sec

SATA 3 ® transfer speed 6GBit/s - about 600MB/sec. and will be available around 2011.

SATA 4 may also be just visible on the horizon 12Gbit/s – about 1200MB/sec

Some SATA11 drive will not speed down to a SATA1 controller.

You have to check the indepth specifications to see if it has a limiting jumper on the drive. On many occasions in these forums a SATA 11 drive has not worked because it ad no been researched before hand.

Post the drive model number IF you have one planned, so we can check.
