Am I correct in believing that SATA 300 drives will work with SATA 150 controllers, but I would only get up to 150 speed ? SATA 300 drives are much cheaper and more readily available.

Yes, that's right - in certain instances you may have to set a jumper on the back of the drive so your motherboard recognises it. They say the speed difference is negligible.

I'm using couple of 250Gb SATAII drives with a SATAI motherboard(s) (two PCs) with no problems. I think one needed to be jumpered while the other was fine. G
