Sat Nav- speed reading accurate?

Is the speed reading on a Sat Nav accurate?

My Sat Nav reads 50kph when the speedometer is showing 53/4kph and 90kph when the speedometer is showing 96/7kph.

I would put more faith in the sat nav than the speedo.

cars speedo and trip milage vary from car to car

in my various cars over the last 14 years making ther same run to Scotland - teh trip milage between cars at a set point have varied by eight miles and inbetween-

Wait till you get a speed summons, then you will know.

have to be accurate within a range of + or - 10%. If your speedo was reading 70 mph, you could in fact be doing 63 or 77 mph ( or somewhere in between ). I would rely on the satnav before I replied on the speedo.

8 miles in a 100

16 miles in 200

The general opinion on the SatNav forums is that the speed indicated on the SatNav is the correct one.

Speedometers on vehicles usually overestimate a little.

mine was saying you are over the speed limit when speedo was on 30. That was yesterday coming home from Scarborough

So I can speed up a bit now, I presume you guy's will pay the speeding fines LOL.

Had to drop to 27 for it to go away

Sat Nav is set up to a correct speed indicator between two points, similar to certain types of speed cameras. The same thing applies to certain police vehicles, that have regular calibrated speedo's and video camera set-ups. Your basic motor car speedometer would fail in a court of law, if speed was a mitigating issue.
