thanks but would prefer to do this by the f8 or f5 method; strangely at present NEITHER will get it into safe mode

F8, and do you use a wireless keyboard, if so replace it with a ps2 keyboard.

I just hold down "Ctrl" on boot up.

I couldn't use keys on my old Compaq so I had to use the method in your first response.

I have f8'ed it; for one of the longest defrags yet on my record

  VoG II 12:52 03 Mar 2007

click here - defrags without the need to go into Safe Mode.

I chuched it into safe mode due to its disobedience today as MOST uncharacteristic of it

VERY long defrag even IN safe mode

BUT F8 does it

Hi,I run Win 98SE and have a suggestion which you may find of interest.
If you go to click here and download a file called (near the bottom of the page) you will be able to install this in your Windows 98SE. This is the Defrag.exe file which they installed in Windows ME.
The file comes complete with all instructions for installation.
Apparently, by the time Microsoft had got to Windows ME they had sorted out the Defrag problem.
I find that the Defrag.exe file from Win ME is about 10 times faster than the standard 98SE file and is much more stable.
I have been using it for years now with no problems whatsoever and it's FREE.

Also be sure to stop ALL running programs including the Screen Saver, A/V and Firewall.

MS have always said Crt but I never found it to work. I use F5 or F8. Just keep taping as the comp boots
