Running Word 97 with Windows XP

I have loaded Office 97 onto a new PC running XP. All appeared to be well but on trying to save new word docs I get an error message : Word for Windows 97 application file has encountered a problem and needs to close" Under details, winword exe seems to be the problem.

All other Office 97 applications seem OK

I have Office 97 running on another XP machine with no problems.

Can I copy a file over or is there another answer?

Run a search for normal.dot and either rename or delete it. Restart Word.

Caught for time earlier so I hope that explains the one sentence..

When you find normal.dot right click on it and either select rename, or delete.

If you want to rename then call it normal.old, when you start Word again it will rebuild normal.dot and all should be fine.

Chris

Thanks for the reply.
I have tried your solution but no change I'm afraid. I should probably have said that I have already uninstalled Office 97 and reinstalled but still the same problem. I'm sure it was OK when I first installed though and has been corrupted somewhere.

thanks

Strange, did you delete or rename? have you restarted? and have you tried the detect and repair option from Word under help?

Hi Chris

I deleted the normal.dot and rebooted. I can't find a detect and reoair option in Word 97

Thats cus it hasn't got detect and repair ;o) Doh..

Uninstall it again then go to start and run and type regedit

Navigate from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE go to SOFTWARE then Microsoft, right click on Office then delete

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office

Re-install Office...

I will try shortly. My wife is having an "I told you so moody" because we are having these problems with transferring from the old to the new PC.

Get back to you shortly.

Hi Chris

Looks like single beds tonight. Thanks for your perseverance. Did exactly as you said. All looked to be alright but still the same error message when trying to save. Seems as though there is still something on the Pc that is conflicting with Word.
