Running laptop with shot battery

I have just aquired a Dell Inspiron 6000 and it appears the battery has had it. It is constantly recharging and won't hold a charge. Am I doing any harm to the BIOS by using the PC with the mains adaptor, while the battery is in this state? Is it possible to stop the battery from attempting to recharge, as I am quite happy using the mains adaptor permanently?

Take the battery out you do not need it in. Unless you use it as a weight balance when useing it on your lap...like I do with an old machine of mine.

No problem - just continue using mains permanently and take the battery out. I've used mine like that for the last 3 years and it's fine.

Thanks for that.
