Rundll32.exe missing or corrupt

When I try to open programs or icon, the above message appears. How do I replace this file in windows XP.

First thing is to check your AV as these are sometimes viruses.

If all is well then Put you're XP CD disk in the CD ROM drive.
Click Start, and then click Run.

Type expand X:\i386\rundll32.ex_ c:\windows\rundll32.exe in the Open box

Replace the X with you're drive letter.

Thanks Spikeychris
I cleared all virii and trojans. When i type the line you gave. this error comes up 'cannot find expand'. the underscore after the rundll32.ex , is it correct?

Any further clues

Copy and paste the below into run...

expand X:\i386\rundll32.ex_ c:\windows\rundll32.exe

Sorry...ignore the X...replace it with you're drive letter.

  spikeychris 18:19 19 May 2004

So if you're CD drive is "D" then do this..

expand d:\i386\rundll32.ex_ c:\windows\rundll32.exe

Sorry, but it displays the same message asking if I've typed it correctly

  spikeychris 18:30 19 May 2004

Post here exactly what you are typing.

  mak2 18:34 19 May 2004

expand d:\i386\rundll32.ex_ c:\windows\rundll32.exe

with a space between the _ and c

Run sfc /scannow

It will ask for your XP cd to be in the drive and scan for missing corrupt windows files

Hope this does the job

Just had my dinner, Fruitbats SFC will work. The fact that you said you have cleared all "virii and trojans"...the Sircam32 virus is prone to cause the problems you are having.
