Rubbish Virgin Broadband service

  allclear 22:11 02 Feb 2011

Since December my broadband & email services have been virtually non existent. I just tested the speed, using pc advisor speed tester, and its less than 0.5 Mbps and they are charging me for 10 Mbpb!!!.

I have written a couple of complaints letters since but have no response. I am being told that there is high utilisation problem in my area which they are still fixing. One of the Virgin Customer services guy said that the reason its taking longer is "because the engineers are still on their way from Jupiter to fix the problem". Never Virgin again.
Can anyone recommend a good reliable broadband provider please? Thanks

Yes been with The cable service right back to NYNEX days without any problems and more than happy to recomend them, they came right near the top in the PCA magazine survey on ISP's last month.

Sorry you are having problems but it seems rare looking at the survey.

This is the one that the virgin engineers use.

Are you connected by cable or wireless.

Non cable by the look of it.

buteman - the wireless bit is surely irrelevant.

I have 10meg connection and using Butemans link I got 9777kbps on Virgin cable

Through BT phoneline or cable service?

Cable service. I also have Virgin fone service (no problem so far). As I have sky Dish, just wondering how their (Sky) internet service is like?

I also have a cable service .TV Broadband and phone, All with the speeds listed. And no problems.
I would suggest if you are useing wirelss you check your system. I actually use the elthernet connection and as stated I have never had a problem or reduction in speed

That's a very good point by 'sharpamat'. You should perform your speed test with an ethernet cable directly between a PC and the Cable Modem, excluding even any router, to establish the speed that you are actually getting from Virgin.

Do you have a different cable you could try as sometimes the the cable can cause the fault.

THere are 2 type of Ethernet (RJ45) cables, the twisted (One end send the other end recieve)and the Patch cable where both ends are the same (used for extentions)- See link

It is possible that you either have the wrong cable for the modem or the cable itself has a fault (loose/frayed connection).

If you need a cable it is the twisted pair and are available from a selection of suppliers click here at a reasonable price.
