Would someone briefly explain the difference between a router and a modem.
Thanks in advance.

A modem [Modulator/Demodulator] is required to connect a PC to the Internet.
A Router is modem with more bells/whistles inputs/outputs/possibly wifi/led's etc, which allows the connectios of more than one PC.

For what it is worth,I have found that a Modem/Router connects at a faster speed, and you can also view stats if you have a problem.
