router to isp issue

I am using a Netgear DG834GT on Pipex.

Since day one the router constantly loses the connection to pipex.

The annoying aspect is if you go into the router and try to connect LCP is allowed to come up but won't authenticate. The only way to reconnect is a reboot. I have contacted Pipex who sent me a big list of settings which I had all correct but on their advice I have moved it downstairs into the main socket at the expense of in house signal strength. Still having the same issue.

I can't comment on the speedtouch used previuosly as when the pc went off the modem went off so was never left on 24/7. This is why I can't decide to take the router back for exchange or not?

I set the MTU to 1500 as pipex advised even though netgear says 1495 ish is max. Anyone know better on this?
