Not sure about legality but I used Smartripper to rip from DVD and Audacity to edit audio ripped. Both are free programs. More excellent guide and tutorial at click here and click here.

if its this summers latest blockbuster or most dvd movies available then no sorry, it is ileagal to copy them in any way. read the copywrite screen displayed before the movie for more info on this.

it can be easily done though as above and i doubt the swat team will kick in your door at 4am if you do this but in most cases it will involve breaking the law. be careful.
