Right-Click format

I have just noticed something i've noticed before all the time I've had a computer.

When I righ-click one of my hard drives I get a format option. Is this simplay a quick way of reformatting the hard drive?

I ask becuase its sounds weird that a format can be done while windows is still running.

What does it do exactly?

I have two hard drives both with XP. I just had a hard drive replaced and so now I want to format the smaller 40GiG drive and use that simply for backing up. Can I use the right-click format option?

The only other way I know is to use the windows Xp disk but then that would install the OS as well which I don't want.

You can use this method to format a slave drive but not the drive which is currently running windows.
