Restoring Sony Vaio

A friend's son was sold a Sony Vaio PCG K315B in good faith from a fellow marine(!).
I've been trying to get it to run okay but it is not looking good so far. Microsoft Update says the Professional version of XP installed is and cannot be authenticated.
I then tried to reset the whole setup back to factory settings (It is labelled underneath as having XP Home) and after checking through Sony's website, I cannot get the Vaio restoration program, it seems to have been deleted.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could please to get back to factory or have the family been sold a pup?

Thanks

It seems that the OS was upgraded to XP pro from Home
