Resolution keeps changing

A friend, running Win 98SE on an Athlon 2800, 512mb ram and onboard 64mb shared graphics.

He has a 17" TFT monitor supposedly set at 1024 x 768 but every time he starts up it comes up in 800 x 600. He resets it to 1024 x 768 clicks Apply and then OK. Next time he boots it is back to 800 x 600???

Any suggestions, please?

to update the driver for his onboard graphics chip.

...or his onboard graphics won't support a particular combination of resolution and refresh rates.

It's easy to check by using the Advanced button from Settings in Display Properties>Adapter tab and clicking on the List All Modes button.

This will reveal all the resolution, colour and refresh rates the onboard graphics supports.

Thanks, Stuartli. emailed that info to him as well.

I apologise for keeping this thread open but my friend has now decided to have some very major structural modifications done to his house.

I have suggested that it might be better to defer all problems that he has until after the mods have been done.

Will tick this and if/when the problem arises I will post again.

Thanks for all the responses.
