Replacing Motherboard with Win XP

Some time ago, I read an article (cant remember where) that if you replace a motherboard on a system with win xp (either version), that the system does not run, and some sort of registration has to be done - with one PC, thats hard - has anyone heard of this, or can a mother board be simply replaced with existing peripherals (assuming RAM etc functions with new board).....

Have just done such a move. After transferring all hardware booted up as normal, it searched for various drivers and the only one needed was for a USB connection to a particular application.
